In addition to the various meetings, seminars, and conferences organized by players in the food, agriculture, and agronomy sector, Montpellier Métropole also organizes a number of events to showcase the vitality and wealth of its ecosystem, and provide visibility for the many projects that emerge here. This includes two flagship events.
Co-organized by Montpellier Métropole and the UNESCO World Food Chair, the Territorial Meetings on Agroecological Transition and Sustainable Food were launched in Montpellier in 2019. These meetings and conferences highlight territorial initiatives and strategies that support more responsible agriculture and food practices. Taking place every two years at a different location, the event returns to its hometown in 2024.
Based on four annual gatherings held in spring, summer, fall, and winter, the 4 Seasons of Agroecology and Sustainable Food event comprised 200 individual events taking place around the metropolitan area.
The Food, Agriculture, and Agronomy sector brings together more than 60 companies in the Montpellier metropolitan area, including some 40 Agtech companies, which together represent more than 900 jobs. This includes companies such as Microphyt, Smag (InVivo group), ITK, Fruition Sciences,Matahi, Qualiplante, ADNid, Envilys, Nyseos, Ecofilae, Food Pilot, PimpUp, and more.
Innovation is a cultural cornerstone of the Montpellier Métropole area, stimulated by an ecosystem that provides support and assistance, whose vitality is rooted in long-standing expertise. Montpellier was the first city in France to launch a Business & Innovation Centre, back in 1987, when we created Cap Alpha.
Today, the Montpellier BIC incubator is recognized worldwide and continues to assist up-and-coming startups with the same passion as always. Example include Airgaia, Rosella Biosystem, and Greenphage, among many others.
A pioneer in the field of assisting businesses, Montpellier Métropole is also committed to an ambitious agro-ecological and food policy intended to make the territory exemplary.
To achieve significant impact and create the conditions for agricultural resilience and food sovereignty, while at the same time contributing to the region’s adaptation to climate change, we are implementing a strategy based on five key objectives:

Backed by Montpellier Métropole from the outset, the European DIVA program has confirmed that the greater Montpellier area is a cradle of talent for agri-digital solutions. 134 projects were selected in 2021 from nine countries around Europe. 46 of the projects were from France. Among those, nine were from the Montpellier Métropole area. The projects were presented by Ecofilae, Fruition Sciences, E-Tumba, Cap2020, IAdvance, Ecoclimasol, Permagro, Syha, and Mycea.

Based in Montpellier, Agropolis International is a multi-stakeholder collaborative platform that unites research and training organizations, local authorities (including Montpellier Métropole), professional organizations, and the general public to address the challenges of agriculture, food, biodiversity, and the environment. The scientific community in the Montpellier area and throughout the Occitanie region is recognized for its excellence in fundamental sciences and its expertise in regional, Mediterranean, and tropical issues.
CIRAD is the French agricultural research organization specializing in sustainable development for tropical and Mediterranean regions. A key player in agronomic research and international cooperation, CIRAD has set up its two main research centers in the Montpellier Métropole area, one in Montpellier (Lavalette campus) and the other in Montferrier-sur-Lez (Baillarguet campus).
The French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) plays an integral role for scientific research in the greater Montpellier area, with an ever-growing number of scientific collaborations. While CNRS is involved with nearly every scientific field, its Eastern Occitanie group represents a particularly strong presence in the biological sciences, ecology & environment, and chemistry. One of its unique achievements is the creation of a Europe-wide Ecotron ecological experimental platform on the Baillarguet campus, open to national and international research teams in the fields of ecology, population and community biology, and agronomy. More than 131 startups have originated from, or are supported by, CNRS operations in the area.
Based in Montpellier, the UNESCO ICIREWARD International Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Water Systems Dynamics is the first UNESCO research and training center dedicated to inland water in France. Considered one of the world’s foremost water research centers, ICIREWARD unites and fosters collaboration between nearly 400 scientists and 150 doctoral students in 17 research laboratories. This scientific community constitutes a rich, multi-disciplinary, and international network to enhance our understanding of water-related issues.
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)) has its world headquarters at the Agropolis International campus in Montpellier. Working with 15 research centers and hundreds of partner organizations (including CNRS, INRA, IRD, CIRAD, IRSTEA, and more), CGIAR mobilizes over 10,000 scientists worldwide, making it the world’s largest agricultural research partnership. It manages major programs designed to improve food security worldwide.
Home of Agropolis International, a major worldwide research hub, and the Agri Sud-Ouest Innovation competitiveness cluster, Montpellier Métropole hosts one of the world’s largest scientific communities involved with agriculture, food, biodiversity, and the environment. There are over 28 research and training establishments operating locally, 15 of which are international. Other major players include the CGIAR consortium (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research), the International ICEREWARD center (the leading UNESCO Center for research and training dedicated to water and one of the largest internationally, with its headquarters in Montpellier), along with #DigitAg, the only French Convergence Institute focusing on digital agriculture, funded as part of the Investments for the Future (Investissements d’Avenir) program.
With an international perspective, this scientific ecosystem contributes to the economic fabric of the Montpellier metropolitan area, which is home to a growing number of Agtech companies.
Montpellier Métropole launched MedVallée, an excellence hub for global health, uniting the area’s three major excellence sectors: food/agronomy/agriculture, environment, and health. MedVallée unites researchers, academics, business stakeholders, entrepreneurs, institutions, and the general public, with the support of its co-founders. MedVallée is led jointly by Montpellier Métropole, the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region, and the French government.
