AGRI - AGRO
Montpellier, a global cluster for agronomy research
Home of Agropolis International, a major worldwide research hub, and the Agri Sud-Ouest Innovation competitiveness cluster, Montpellier Métropole hosts one of the world’s largest scientific communities involved with agriculture, food, biodiversity, and the environment. There are over 28 research and training establishments operating locally, 15 of which are international. Other major players include the CGIAR consortium (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research), the International ICEREWARD center (the leading UNESCO Center for research and training dedicated to water and one of the largest internationally, with its headquarters in Montpellier), along with #DigitAg, the only French Convergence Institute focusing on digital agriculture, funded as part of the Investments for the Future (Investissements d’Avenir) program.
With an international perspective, this scientific ecosystem contributes to the economic fabric of the Montpellier metropolitan area, which is home to a growing number of Agtech companies.
Montpellier Métropole launched MedVallée, an excellence hub for global health, uniting the area’s three major excellence sectors: food/agronomy/agriculture, environment, and health. MedVallée unites researchers, academics, business stakeholders, entrepreneurs, institutions, and the general public, with the support of its co-founders. MedVallée is led jointly by Montpellier Métropole, the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region, and the French government.
