A CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL DESTINATION

Montpellier is also home to a large number of international events, including the Radio France Festival, Montpellier Danse, FISE, and Printemps des Comédiens.

It also features the oldest continuously operating Faculty of Medicine in the Western world, as well as the Musée Fabre, home to one of Europe’s richest collections of fine art, and the Mo.Co Hôtel des Collections, which rounds out the area’s contemporary offering.

Medieval architecture blends harmoniously with contemporary creations, including many emblematic buildings designed by renowned architects, such as “Arbre Blanc” by Sou Fujimoto, “Le Nuage” by Philippe Starck, and “RBC Design”, a building designed by Jean Nouvel.

This varied and complementary offering enhances the destination’s attractiveness and contributes to its positive, youthful, festive, and creative image.

A territory certified with the “Pays d’Art et d’Histoire” label

Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole was the first French metropolis to be awarded the “Ville et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire” (City and Region of Art and History) label in 2019. Created in 1985, this label is awarded by the Ministry of Culture, on the recommendation of the national council “Conseil National des Villes et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire”, to municipalities and urban communities that commit to a policy of raising awareness among residents, visitors, and young people regarding the quality of their historic heritage, architecture, and living environment.

This national recognition reflects Montpellier Métropole’s commitment to preserving and promoting the heritage of today and tomorrow. The label has attracted national and international attention to Montpellier Métropole’s historic heritage, further helping to make the area a popular destination for visitors.

A “Grand Site d’Occitanie” destination

The Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole area is one of only ten Grands Sites Occitanie (Major Occitanie Site) in the Mediterranean region. Created by the Occitanie Region, this label is designed to promote heritage, cultural, and historical sites, and foster economic development in the region.
