LOW-EMISSION ZONE
Above all, a low-emission zone is a public health measure. Its main goal is to protect people living in urban areas from emissions of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and fine particles (PM) emitted by road traffic. In terms of the Euro emissions standard, older vehicles have higher emissions.
Depending on the production year, a vehicle must meet pollution standards set at the European level (Euro 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6); these standards also define French Crit'Air stickers.
Access to the most polluting vehicles (Crit’Air non-classified, Euro 5 and 4) has already been banned within the city limits since January 1, 2024. Committed to preserving the health of its population, Montpellier Métropole therefore continuing to roll out the exclusion schedule in the same way as specified by the 2019 Mobility Orientation Law (Loi Orientation Mobilités, LOM), with Crit’Air 3 vehicles banned starting January 1, 2025.
Another major benefit of this measure is the reduction in the amount of CO2 emitted by vehicles (greenhouse gases, CO2/km). Greenhouse gases are at the heart of climate change, contributing to the observed increase in average temperature at a global level.
Montpellier Métropole also decided to create a number of exceptions in order to take into account certain specificities linked to economic activities, as well as the needs of private individuals.
