“Les Essenti’Elles”, boosting entrepreneurship for women in disadvantaged neighborhoods for the past three years

Access to entrepreneurship can be difficult for women, and even more so for those living in the city’s priority districts. That’s why, in 2022, France Active Airdie Occitanie set up Les Essenti’Elles, a support program to help women entrepreneurs set up their own businesses.

Combining extra support and financial security, this program gives women the best chance of success. Every year, Les Essenti’Elles provides support to 15 women, all selected based on their business project, demonstrated commitment to society, and motivation.

In just three years, the challenge has been met. There have been three cohorts of laureates, the most recent of which began recently. The vast majority of the first 30 women entrepreneurs to benefit from the program are still in business and moving forward with positive momentum. Ombeline Gavroy is a perfect example.

Based in Montpellier, this enthusiastic fitness and sports professional, a graduate of the class of 2023, is at the head of Yoliya Pilates, where she promotes well-being through Pilates sessions for adults and seniors.  She also offers programs for pregnant women and Gym/baby-stroller classes, enabling young mothers to enjoy postnatal fitness with their babies, both indoors and out.

Certified in MamDanse® prenatal dance techniques and a graduate of the Institut De Gasquet in pre- and post-natal yoga in particular, she praises the support she received through Essenti’Elles. “In addition to the financial support that enabled me to stabilize my cash flow, the program helped me to refocus my business and regain my positive energy,” she says, also adding that she has now started to earn a salary.

Reserved for women living in or wishing to set up their businesś in one of Montpellier’s ten priority districts, on the condition that their business is less than three years old, Les Essenti’Elles awards a financial bonus to its selected participants, for a total of €25,000 to €30,000 to be divided between the 15 laureates in each group, while also providing support with a training program tailored to the specific needs of each person.

In addition, the women are mentored for a year by an expert in their field. Another of the program’s key benefits is the notion of “collective strength”. “Laureates meet regularly to share and exchange ideas,” emphasizes Lætitia Léonard, Director of France Active Airdie Occitanie, initiator of the program.

Radhia Fattoum can attest to this. “Although this competition represents a real financial boost, it also enables us to support each other. It is encouraging for all women who want to start their own business,” concludes this graduate of the class of 2024, who created Symar Transport et Logistique, a low-carbon transport company, with her husband.
